Mike posted this in Course Studio – it’s my new favorite Redl link. Wow – this one really shows off the beauty of his concepts. Note how people sit transfixed, meditating, in some shots. Posed or not, they seem a natural part of the installation. Wow, thanks Mike!

Madeline & Paul found cool Redl links, too — like Redl in context of other “extreme” artists combined in photography show, and others comment on his interesting educational background.
At Wright State, I love the cadet lounge in the Detachment, the lobby in Russ, and the Bridge Cafe. These are where I spend most of my time, in addition to my dorm room, which feels more like home than I expected. It is rather different from my room at home, and I haven’t shared a room since I was 6, but I get along with my roommate really well and I love our room. The Bridge smells like coffee (which is a comfort smell even though I’ve given it up) and I love that the baristas actually know me. They have my smoothie order memorized and chat with me and other customers as I wait for it. So much better than Starbucks. The detachment has my AFROTC family, where I feel supported and am also well entertained by the antics of other cadets. The lobby in Russ is the epicenter of the engineering program. I love sitting there on a comfy bench, programming with my instructor in reach and watching everyone go by.
Art is life. Art is anything that man creates that invokes or helps a person work through emotions. It can be visual, but also musical, performance-based, use of language. Any creation, any expression of life that says, “I’m human, I’m here, I feel, I matter.” Art does not have to be ‘beautiful’ to be impactful. If a piece provokes horror, than it has made the viewer pay attention to it, think about it, rather than pass over it. Art can be used to make a statement, to be appreciated by others, or just for oneself.
I’ve personally grown up surrounded by art. My grandfather had a print shop in New York City, and my uncle and father are in the same business. I inherited my grandfather’s artistic ability (for he was of the time before computerized type-setting, when posters had to be designed by hand.) My family always emphasized the importance of art, and I’ve been and artist for as long as I am able.
The movement in Redl is similar, but different, from the movement we find in Round Dance. In Round Dance the structure itself moves, while in Redl the movement is in the color. Both are cylindrical, and can be viewed from a number of different perspectives. White, sparkling Round Dance creates an air of calm, while Redl, starkly contrasting from its dark surroundings, may inspire any number of different emotions.
Coming into college, a lot of students do not know what to expect. Most are worried about if they will make friends and how hard it is going to be. Wright state offers several ways that can help soothe these worries, one being the Wellness center. When people think about the wellness center, they automatically assume it is for people who need to go and talk about their problems like a therapy center. Most would never assume that the center would provide help in several areas varying from depression to career indecision. If someone has procrastination issues, which a lot of students do, the center can help students learn time management.
We have all heard of the dreaded ‘freshmen fifteen’ campus recreation in the Student Union can help students avoid that. They have a fitness center, racquetball courts, swimming pool, and fitness classes that they offer. This can help freshmen relieve stress and stay in shape while they are away from home. Exercise is a popular choice for relieving stress and students freshmen year is a hard time so being involved with in recreation can help.

The first quarter of my Freshman year of college was a lot of fun. I realized that film production wasn’t quite for me. I’m not disappointed with myself about the less-than-satisfactory grade I will inevitably receive from my film appreciation class because truthfully, I did learn a bunch of new things about film analysis and critiquing. I’m glad that I signed up for an ensemble band class. It has been great getting to play my alto saxophone again. The choice to pursue a music minor might have been impulsive and a bit influenced by one of my professors, but after thinking about it, I’m happy that I chose to give it a try.
Fall quarter is almost over and all I can do is reflect on all of the things I participated in and the new things I have learned. This quarter I learned how to play a piano and read treble and bass clefs at the same time. I also matured as a writer thanks to the english course I took. I learned many things about staged theatre from the ancient greek beginnings up to modern day Broadway. I will never watch a movie the same way again after having taken film appreciation. My eyes will be more focused on watching and understanding a film’s mise` en scene, cinematography, lighting, composition, and narrative structure. Lastly, I played in an ultimate frisbee tournament up in Columbus during the middle of October. It was cold, it was muddy, but it was fun. I learned many things about the sport of ultimate frisbee. It was also good getting to play frisbee because running for ultimate kept me in shape.
To finish, I’m excited for winter break, but even more excited for my classes next quarter. Toga party, movie nights, and hanging out with my brother at his university are just a few of the other memories from this first quarter. Hope you guys enjoyed my posts. Take care and remember, you only live once, so why waste it?

I feel that the people who recreated the museum and chapel wanted people who will never be able to travel to actually see them. Being able to experience them as if they were there is what the creators wanted. This goes along with Charles Hutchinson’s “idea of creating happiness in future generations.” Also according to some people museums are a way to house “all the world’s civilizations,” bringing me back to my first statement of allowing everyone the opportunity to see what others are doing on the opposite side of the world. Whether you can actually visit the site or just simply use Second Life to teleport there, everyone has the opportunity to experience the art in some way.

When I moved in to the honors community, I knew that I’d have to clean for myself. The week before I left my mom taught me many domestic skills that I would be using here for 4 years. One of the many things that she taught me is how to vacuum a floor because I was always never home so I had no clue how to run our vacuum, but some how I could run all my friends’ vacuums. Then she bestowed upon me the knowledge of how to wash dishes by hand because unfortunately there are no dishwashers in the rooms. Then my little sister clogged the toilet because she wondered how much toilet paper is too much. My mom thought that this would be a good time to refresh the skill of using a plunger . She also taught me how to make my bed so that way I get that nice “fresh bed” feel every night. She also taught me the art of the iron. My grandma barged in to my domestic learning and taught me how to sew a button back on to a shirt or coat. Growing up, I never had time to learn all of the “chores” of child and teen-hood. Thanks to this, before I came to Wright State I was just a shell of a person with no domestic skills whatsoever. Now I’m a person who gets bothered by a wrinkly bed or a streaky mirror or window.
